Workplace "Spirit"
The Design: The Design Solution
Now it is time to apply what I have learned! I need to develop a design solution that will exceed Mayor Gray's expectations.
Project Duration: January - May 2011
Conference Room
The conference room has a similar design solution with the translucent glass wall and the storage component. However, the long conference table is comprised of 2’x5’ desks that can be wheeled apart and repositioned into a learning space. Flexibility takes precedence in this space in order to preserve square footage and make it multifunctional. The curvilinear sofa allows visitors to sit in on the meeting without sitting at the main table. The soffits and “spirit” light fixtures incorporated into the ceiling design reinforce the concept through irregular rhythm and creating “pops of color” that ultimately represents the diverse passionate population that resides in Lexington.

Socialization Space
After a busy morning, employees need a place to escape to in order to relax and socialize. The socialization space provides the employees with a place to unwind so that they may continue to work to their fullest potential. A clean well-designed break room fosters interaction between employees. Employees will naturally find interests they share by constantly passing the same people at work. These small chit-chats will transform into a close relationship, which will make the team stronger as a whole.
The socialization space includes two plasma TVs, booth seating for comfort and anupscale feel, and a fully equipped kitchen that may be used for company luncheons or personal use. The table and chairs in the middle of the space define a curved circulation path that reinforces the concept. “Pops of color” and “spirit” lights are also incorporated into this space to stir up excitement and energy among users.
An adjacent team area provides a space where employees can quickly
express an idea. Moveable seating reinforces the irregular rhythm, as well as fosters collaboration between team members. This flexible space is multifunctional and can also be used as a learning or social area.

This space is equipped with three large mobile whiteboards that define the space and allow other employees outside the team to give their input on the project while passing by. Encouraging this behavior will help Mayor Gray’s team as a whole to be more innovative because they will acquire multiple perspectives that can be morphed into the best project solution. Some other important elements in this space is a large storage for office supplies and continuous work, Lexington artwork and spirit lights. The colorful soffits highlight the tables used for collaboration.
Semi-enclosed Team Space

The open-team space focuses on the importance of technology in the workplace. This Steelcase office solution allows multiple employees to participate in web conferencing, as well as share ideas quickly and efficiently. This design specifically contributes to Mayor Gray’s “create” organizational culture by giving employees the opportunity to bounce off creative ideas to others, where a response is immediate.
Open Team Space

The small meeting room is designed to foster innovation. Teams require a space to develop ideas and store continuous work. Translucent glass walls give the enclosed space an open feel, and allow employees to feel comfortable sharing their ideas with the rest of the team. A large whiteboard is hung on the far wall to record these ideas. Lexington artwork is hung above the storage component to tell the story of Lexington’s past, present and future. Lastly, the colorful yellow soffit and “spirit” light reinforces the concept.

Space Meeting Space

Office System for Individual Work w/ Adjacent Team Area
This office system provides visual privacy, while still maintaining an open layout. Colorful soffets create “pops of color” and help to define space. Guest chairs with side tables are provided at all individual workspaces to accommodate visitors. The sustainable lighting fixture hung over the adjacent team area reinforce the “spirit” concept. Having a team area adjacent to a private workspace fosters collaboration.

A space for focused work is essential in any workplace. This provides a space for employees to work who need to stay completely focused on the task at hand, with as little distractions as possible. The large surface area provides enough space for the Triple A zones: active, anticipated and archived. A translucent glass wall has been incorporated into the space to allow the user to see movement outside the space, without being distracted by it. This is important because humans feel the most comfortable and safe when they know what is going on around them at all times.
Private Space for Focused Work

Both restrooms exemplify sustainably responsible design. Each material, including the “spirit” sconces are environmentally friendly. Soffits are carried into this space as well, that complement the round sink bowls.
